Choices We Can Make When Facing Uncertainty (02/02/)

Happy Tuesday!

While you might not see it at first, the articles today are both about our habits. In different arenas and in different ways, both point us to think differently, which gives us a chance to both examine our habits, and choose something different if that would serve us.

Think about that thread as you read both articles – I think that will make both more valuable to you.

Speaking of habits, we have organizational habits too (you might call them culture). I have two free resources for you to consider as you think about your culture of leadership development.

First, with the organizational lens - If you are responsible for or involved in the development of leaders in your organization, you will want to join me for my latest webinar on Feb 19. The details and free registration are here.

And for you personally – I am in the middle of dropping five special episodes of the Remarkable Leadership Podcast (a new one each Thursday) where I am joined by Jennifer Moss to talk about specific things an individual leader can do to change culture in 20 minutes or less. See the latest one here or subscribe whenever you listen to podcasts to catch them all.

Thanks for reading and have a great week.

You are Remarkable!

The Year of Analog

Have you heard about the “year of analog” movement?

It’s a cultural shift where people are intentionally reducing screen time and AI reliance to embrace tactile offline experiences. People have been taking steps like “no phone days” and the like for years, but the movement seems to be gaining steam.

I think there is good reason to do that.

I’ve been on several flights in the last few days – a place that used to be a digital desert. But now, between onboard Wi-Fi and pre-downloaded movies, and games that work offline, the sky is filled with screens.

I’m not sure it is progress when I was the only person in my row on four flights who could be seen with a book or paper and pencil.

In the big picture, the Year of Analog is causing an uptick in crafting, jigsaw puzzles, board games, vinyl records, film photography, and more.

It’s leading to more walks without headphones, more journaling with a pen and paper, and more physical gatherings.

The irony of you reading this on a screen isn’t lost on me, and yes, I do hope you continue to read what I write and listen to and watch what we produce.

But you don’t need to do it every day.

Perhaps you won’t buy a turntable or pull out the card table to do a puzzle (though both sound pretty good to me). But you can likely improve your mental health, clarity and even your creativity by unplugging, de-screening, and getting a bit more real-life and less virtual.

Whether you participate in the movement or not, I urge you to think about how your life and results might improve with more reflective quiet time and in-person interaction too.

None of this means throwing away our devices or cancelling memberships if you don’t want to. What it does mean is being intentional about making sure all these wonderful digital tools we have remain tools, rather than unintentional traps.

Choices We Can Make When Facing Uncertainty

Our world is more uncertain than ever. While uncertainty has always been a part of life at the day-to-day level, other factors are playing a bigger role in our lives now. Whether the uncertainties are societal, geo-political, economic or technology-based, they play a role in our lives, work and psyche. Facing uncertainty is a skill we need to understand and cultivate, yet it is rarely talked about.

Until it is, we will continue to struggle with it in significant ways.
