Developing Wise Leaders (2/11/2025)

Happy Tuesday!
Whether you watched the Super Bowl Sunday night or whether your team won or lost (congrats to Eagles fans), I’m sharing an important leadership lesson from the winning coaching staff with you below. I’m also sharing the promised follow up to last week’s article on leadership wisdom (here it is if you missed it.)
Now that we have an idea about what leadership wisdom is, I’m writing about how we can develop it.
I am coming to believe that the underlying skill I am writing about in my new book, Flexible Leadership (It publishes March 25 – learn more and get a sample chapter here) is wisdom.
For several weeks I have been mentioning a new webinar – if you haven’t registered for it yet (it’s free), now is the time – it is this Thursday at 3:30 pm ET. It’s titled Navigating Uncertainty: Mastering Flexible Leadership in a Changing World. I believe it will help you deal with one of the most important challenges we face today – uncertainty – and help you learn more about the approach I’m talking about in the new book. Register here.
If you love this issue, please forward it to someone you think would enjoy it. (Scroll to the bottom and see some ways you can get some gifts from us for doing so.) If you are reading it because it was forwarded, please subscribe here.
Make it a great day and remember…
You are Remarkable!
Kevin 😊

Leadership Flexibility on Display
Sunday night the Philadelphia Eagles ran away with the Super Bowl Championship. This isn’t news. But there is a leadership story worth telling about the new champions.
Last year the Eagles rushed the ball on about 45% of their plays and passed the other 55%. This year they flipped that script, rushing over 56% of the time – the highest in the league. While every team has the same basic choice on every play – rush or pass the ball – the Eagles switched their choice over 11% of the time this year - the second biggest shift from last year. (Washington, the only team who made a bigger year-to-year change, lost to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game) The average change across the league? About 1%.
Every team starts the year with the same goal – to win the championship. The Eagles took that goal, which didn’t change, and fundamentally changed the way they did their work. It led to three more regular season wins, and ultimately reaching their biggest goal.
This isn’t really a football story, but an example of leadership flexibility. Some things remain the same, including our mission, our purpose and our values. But we must be willing to change our approach given our situation - if we want to reach the goals we have for ourselves and our teams/organizations.
Fans will say they had different players which helped them decide to change their approach. But other teams added new (star) players but didn’t shift nearly as much as the Eagles did. And (importantly) few coaches flex their approach this much even with new players on their rosters.
Nick Sirianni and his staff just gave us an example Flexible Leadership. We need to look at the context of our situation and flex our approach to leadership to reach our goals in an ever-changing world.
Developing Wise Leaders
If you make a list of the most effective leaders you have experienced, chances are that after considering several specific skills, you will determine that the best leaders also are wise leaders.
But if wise leaders are great leaders, why don’t we spend time and invest in creating them? I wrote about that conundrum last week. But that article didn’t get to the important question of how do we develop more wise leaders?
Thanks for reading. Please reply at any time with questions or feedback for our team.
