Making EI a Strategic Advantage in Uncertain Times (10/7/2025)

Happy Tuesday!

The lead article today was prompted by me connecting the dots between leading in uncertainty (which I have been focusing on in part because of my book, Flexible Leadership) and a presentation I am preparing for a client about effectively using EI skills in their organization. I believe this mashup of ideas is especially important today. If you find this article valuable, please share it broadly with others in your organization, or reply to this email if you would like to talk to us about how we can help with these ideas.

The other article? Take it as an urging, a reminder or a call to action – take your pick. But when you do, you will be glad you did.

Next week I will try to share some pictures from our fall trip to the farm. And who knows, maybe that trip will impact what I write for you.

Make it a great Tuesday and remember …

You are Remarkable!

What You Can Do

There is plenty of uncertainty and complexity in our world today. While you can’t change that, you can change how you prepare yourself for it, and how you respond to it. Rather than lamenting the uncertainty, let’s think about what we can do to help ourselves deal with it proactively.

Unfortunately, I see too many people doing things that unintentionally make navigating uncertainty harder for them. Here are the biggest three:

  • Watching too much news. We need to be informed, but with news media that is rarely balanced, extended consumption (regardless of source) tends to harden our opinions which will lessen our curiosity and openness to dealing with uncertainties.

  • Scrolling in echo chambers. An extension of the previous point, I suppose, but content that is user created, or reading open comments may further lock us in intellectually. Perhaps worse though is if the commentary we read is very “us” vs. “them” focused, it will make us more negative and cynical – two traits that do not help us deal with uncertainty effectively.

  • Avoiding or denying the uncertainty. When you read this advice, you might see that these aren’t good strategies. But too many of us act as if the uncertainty doesn’t exist or just try to sidestep it. Please stop doing these things just like the items above.

While there is plenty more you can do, when you these three things, you will set yourself up for greater success – more than you might realize.

Making EI a Strategic Advantage in Uncertain Times

One of the biggest challenges facing organizations today is the prevalence of complexity and uncertainty and how they are impacting decisions, culture, results and more. While senior leaders will nod and agree that complexity and uncertainty are having an impact, most are proactively addressing these factors or connecting them to training and development activities.

While there are many tools and approaches we can use to address or harness complexity and uncertainty, there are tools that your organization are aware of, but haven’t connected the dots for how these tools can help you navigate complexity and uncertainty.

Today, I specifically want to talk about the tools of EI as a strategic advantage that can be leveraged today.
