Overcoming Initiative Burnout (01/27/2026)

In partnership with

Happy Tuesday!

Last week I wrote about a source of burnout that we don’t talk about very much (as if we need another one). Here is that article if you missed it or want a refresh. That matters because this week’s article helps us (personally and helps us help our teams) overcome the source of burnout.

I’m also including some lessons from the big weather event you might be experiencing – but the message applies even if you aren’t dealing with cold, snow or ice. (A version of this was yesterday’s Your Remarkable Day – a three times a week newsletter I write to inform, inspire and generally help you have a remarkable day. If you aren’t subscribed, you can change that here.)

If you are responsible for or involved in the development of leaders in your organization, you will want to join me for my latest webinar on Feb 19. The details and free registration are here.

Thanks for reading and have a great week.

You are Remarkable!

Kevin 😊

Weather Alert

If you live in the U.S., odds are good you’ve been experiencing some real winter weather.

Here are four lessons for us in this weather event.

Awareness. You can’t act on a weather event if you don’t know it is coming! We need to be present and aware in all situations and try to minimize our blind spots.

Preparation. Once we are aware, we can choose to prepare. How you need to prepare depends on your forecast. Maybe you need to fill your fuel tanks, go to the grocery, or check the batteries in your flashlights. Whatever those preparations are, we know that when we are prepared, we will be more confident in uncertainty and more successful too.

Focus. Once the event is in progress, we need to keep our focus on what we can control within the context of the situation. Focus always serves us in times of chaos and uncertainty and helps us adjust as needed.

Presence. All these other lessons have one foundational thing in common: Being present. When we are present in any context, we are better able to plan, shift, adjust, and flex based on what is truly happening in the moment.

We can’t control the weather – what comes will come.

But we can control our response.

If you have been intentional, you have weathered this weather better than if you didn’t. Chances are, the worst stories you will read in the news will be about people who were victims not of the snow, ice, and cold, but of their lack of the four things above:

Awareness.

Preparation.

Focus.

Presence.

And all those things are within our complete control.

I hope you are safe (and warm). And I hope you realize that this message has used weather as an example, but it isn’t about weather at all, and applies to you even if you have been basking in the sun for days.

Many things will arrive in our lives and work that we can’t control, but we can always control our response to them – and that response can have a significant impact on how we can influence the way the situation impacts us.

Your choices and responses are always in your control.

Overcoming Initiative Burnout

Last week I wrote about initiative burnout – but real – problem facing organizations today. I also promised this important follow-up.

It is one thing to know initiative burnout exists, it is something else entirely to know the underlying causes of it and how to overcome it.
