Overcoming Resistance to Training (08/05/2025)

Happy Tuesday!
This week, a follow-up to last week’s article about why people don’t attend training – with some suggested solutions. It is my hope that you will share this in your organizations to create a more positive approach to creating learning events and processes that will serve your organization and team members.
You’ll also read my rant about weather – maybe you will disagree, or maybe it will make you smile.
Lastly, before I go, registration for Virtual LeaderCon is now open! If you know what it is, you can just mark your calendar for the afternoons (ET) of Sept 22-25 and register. If you don’t know, click the link to learn more. I promise you will find at least one session that can change your perspective and results.
Make it a great Tuesday and remember …
You are Remarkable!
Kevin 😊

It’s Hot!
I know it has been hot in much of the U.S. for the last couple of weeks. And yes, I know there are times when heat can be dangerous for certain groups and occupations. But most of us aren’t in those occupations or groups.
Yet often, those are the people I hear complaining.
Here’s what I want to say to those folks.
“I know it is hot, and I know it is uncomfortable. But it’s summer. Chances are the temp you are complaining about isn’t some new record, it just hot. Hydrate and stay inside if you can.”
Maybe I sound like an old man shouting to “stay off my lawn”, but what I want to sound like is a voice of reason.
Things will be uncomfortable sometimes.
Spoiler alert – it will be really cold sometime this winter too.
But variation in temperature is what most all of us experience. (We can’t all live in San Diego, but if you want less weather variation, you could move there.)
Weather changes – the thermometer reads higher than expected sometimes.
Variation is part of life. Some discomfort is too. So maybe, just maybe, if the temperature gets too hot you can just remember, “it’s summer” and focus on something else more productive and positive in our conversations with others.
Thanks for listening.
And stay cool.
Overcoming Resistance to Training
Last week I wrote about some of the reasons people don’t want to go to training. Today I want to help solve the problem that I outlined in that article. Let’s talk about overcoming the resistance to training.
If you want to overcome the resistance to training, while you need to know what the objections are, there are some things you can do both organizationally and interpersonally to lower resistance. In other words, when the items below are in place, you will lower overall resistance before you get to specific objections.
