Supporting Leaders – an Organizational Imperative (01/13/2026)

Happy Tuesday!
Two articles today that both lead with a question. I think these are both good questions – questions worth considering and answering. While I hope you apply what you learn from both of them, I also hope you take this message as a reminder of the power of questions.
Here’s a question to ponder today:
What is your question to statement ratio?
(and is that the ration that is serving you best?)
And two more:
Who would benefit from reading this?
(and why not invite them to subscribe?)
Thanks for reading.
You are Remarkable!

What Do You See?
As humans, we like to think we are objective. This isn’t always the case. Here is a case in point.
We tend to see what we are looking for. And we tend to see through the lenses of our beliefs.
This applies in all sorts of situations – including how we view others and their behavior/choices.
I was reminded of these facts last week.
The incident that leads to the death Renee Good in Minneapolis last week has been documented by several video recordings. While I have seen very little of them, I have listened to people’s responses and beliefs after they watched exactly the same video.
Same video with very different responses and explanations for the events.
Not having watched much of it, I don’t have an opinion – that isn’t my point. My point is to realize that what we see is influenced by what we are looking for and what we believe (and what we believe influences what we are looking for too).
I’m not trying to vilify or support any view – I’m using this example to show us or remind us, that our filters and biases are powerful, and we need to remember that personally and as a leader.
And once we have decided (even if based on those biases), it becomes hard for us to see another perspective or consider a new explanation.
One of the ways I try to do that (and which I am trying to model here) is to stay curious and observant longer, because when we do, we have a chance (just a chance!) to remove some of our biases which might otherwise blind us or lead us to incomplete conclusions or decisions.
Spend time today thinking about how your filters and biases are impacting how you see and explain things around you. And the next time someone else has a very different interpretation of something you both observed, use that as a clue to step back and better understand their different perspective. It might help you see something new.
Supporting Leaders – an Organizational Imperative
The growing dialogue about employee wellness is useful and important. And while leaders are employees too, most often, those conversations about wellness aren’t about leaders – they are about everyone else. In other words, supporting leaders is often seen as an afterthought.
Which is short-sighted, and quite honestly a bad business decision.
Let’s look at what a leader experiences in most organizations.
