The Role of Confidence in Uncertainty (2/26/2025)

Happy Wednesday!
Last week I wrote about confidence, and I’m doing it again today – talking about the impact confidence can have on how we deal with and navigate uncertainty.
Why focus on confidence? Because even though we know confidence matters for others, we often forget about the power of our personal confidence.
I want to be a gentle reminder for you and an encourager and supporter of you. If I can do anything to build your confidence even a little, I know that you will lead more effectively and make a bigger difference in the world.
That’s the underlying reason I wrote my new book, to help you become the leader you were born to be. Being on that path will include uncertainty. And when you can approach your work – including the uncertainty with greater confidence – greater success will follow. Flexible Leadership: Navigate Uncertainty and Lead with Confidence publishes on March 25, but you can learn more and see how you can get some amazing bonuses when you order copies now here.)
I’ll be unpacking ideas in the new book in my upcoming webinar – The Flexible Leader’s Playbook: Leading More Effectively in Every Situation. Join us and you will leave with new ideas that can build your confidence in the uncertain situations you face as a leader every day.
This interactive webinar is open to all leaders and those who care about the leaders in their organizations. Mark your calendars and join me on March 4 at 1 pm ET.
If you love this issue, please forward it to someone you think would enjoy it. (Scroll to the bottom and see some ways you can get some gifts from us for doing so.) If you are reading it because it was forwarded, please subscribe here.
You are Remarkable!

What if Your AI Transcribed Meeting Notes Aren’t Helping?
The tools are many and are becoming ubiquitous. AI technology allows us to transcribe and summarize our meetings. But just because we can, should we?
Summarized meeting notes and defined next steps seem like a dream come true – and maybe they are. But is there a cost? Here are some things to consider as you answer this question for your team and your specific meetings.
Purpose in use? Do you have a defined purpose for the notes/summary that the tool creates? If not, why use it (and the attendant electricity?)
Transparency in use? Do people know you are using the tools – and for what purpose? If you decide to use them, make sure people know that you are using them and why.
Too transactional? Will using the tools keep people on task, but minimize the natural interaction on non-work topics that are needed to build relationships, camaraderie and trust? Is that worry bigger than the benefits gained?
Self-Censoring? Consider a brainstorming session. Will people not share things (because they are being recorded) that they might have shard otherwise? If so, can you overcome that? And is the summary worth that risk?
I don’t know the answers to these questions for your organization or team – but I think these are worth considering. And remember that your opinion, experience and perspective might not match that of others involved. Which means, while asking these questions of yourself are worthwhile, they will be far more valuable when you ask the whole group.
A brief conversation about these questions might be very helpful in deciding how and when to use these AI meeting tools and might help you learn more about your team too.
I’m neither for or against these tools per se, but do believe they, like most other tools, should be used intentionally and risks and rewards of using them should be weighed. Hopefully these questions and the conversations they create will help you do that in your situation.
The Role of Confidence in Uncertainty
The world has always been an uncertain place. After all, none of us can see or predict the future. And the level of uncertainty we face as the world has grown more complex at times seems almost overwhelming. Yet in the face of that uncertainty, we still need to act. And as a leader, having confidence in uncertainty can set us apart and help us build stronger teams and ultimately get better results.
