The Three R’s for Leaders (07/01/2025)

Happy Halftime!
Welcome to July, the start of the seventh month. Which means that 2025 is half over.
Many sporting events have a break halfway through the game, a halftime. Sometimes teams don’t want that break because of how well things are going. Others need that break to re-assess, re-connect and refocus. This is how I look at the beginning of July.
Halftime.
Maybe your first half was great. Maybe momentum is building, and you feel great about how things are going. Or maybe this year so far has been very difficult.
Regardless, it’s halftime. Take some time in the next couple of days – if you live in the U.S., you might have some holiday time this week that can help you with that. Use some of your time to review your progress, register some lessons, and refresh for the rest of your year.
I am at our farm in Michigan and will be doing exactly that in the coming days. Since I am on vacation for the part of this week and most of next, I am modifying this newsletter just a bit. This week and next week you will still get a new article but will not get the topical “Kevin’s Take” piece.

The Three R’s for Leaders
You may remember the quick and informal way people refer to the three core skills we learn in school as the “three R’s” of reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic. I propose that there are three foundational leadership habits that serve leaders very effectively that could also be called the “three R’s” - Reflection, Rituals and Rhythm.
It would be hard to overstate the value and importance of reflection as a learning tool. In a different context or situation, if I asked you about the word “reflection”, a mirror might be your first response. We use mirrors every day to see how we look. But we can use time to create personal reflection to see how we are doing or what we have learned from things we have done.
