Where Most Leaders are Getting AI Wrong

It’s Going to Change, So Guide It

Culture, organizational culture that is, has been a key discussion point and keynote speaking topic for the last several years, but lately I'm noticing a change.

The change is moving from a focus on culture to a focus on complexity, certainty (really the lack of it), and AI – which is compounding the other two.

As humans and organizations typically do when they begin to focus on something new, the last shining object (in this case, culture) loses its luster.
Just because it's human and organizational nature doesn't mean it's right.

Here's the thing about culture: it will always exist and it will always be morphing, adapting, and changing. That adapting and changing will happen regardless of any effort to guide it.

In our current situation, where our focus has moved to AI, complexity, and uncertainty, our cultures will adapt to these priorities. And without guidance and attention, the adaptions will drift and keep us from becoming the organization we want to become.

Here’s the question to ask yourself: Is your culture moving in ways that help you run, lead, and work more effectively and strategically?

As we rightly think about AI, uncertainty, and complexity, we must concurrently consider how our culture must adapt and change in this new world. The leaders who guide their culture, rather than allowing it to drift in this new world, will be the winners.

Because it we take culture off our radar, it can’t be a competitive advantage for long.

Where Most Leaders are Getting AI Wrong

AI is a big deal; it is moving fast and is and will have huge impacts on work and business. And most leaders are getting it wrong.

They don’t get it wrong on purpose or intentionally, and yet there are four mistakes I see consistently. And once leaders see these mistakes for themselves, they have a chance to change course and lead far more effectively. Here are the mistakes and how to adjust to overcome them.

"Some people call this artificial intelligence, but the reality is this technology will enhance us. So instead of artificial intelligence, I think we’ll augment our intelligence."
