Who Do You Think You Are? The Real Deal on Leadership Identity (4/22/2025)

Happy Tuesday!
Some weeks there is a strong theme in this newsletter. Today, maybe not as much. I’m sharing one observation about a global news story and talking about a piece of our leadership journey that I continue to find more fascinating and important. I hope both are helpful to you today.
Our identity plays a (big) role in our ability to flex and adapt our approach to leading others. I talk about that link in my new book, Flexible Leadership: Navigate Uncertainty and Lead with Confidence. If what you read here intrigues you and gets you thinking, I encourage you to get a copy, then talk to us about how we can help you and the leaders in your organization lead more flexibly now and into the future.
Enjoy what follows. If you have questions or comments, reply to this email, reach out to your contact on our team, or comment on the blog.
Make it a great Tuesday and remember…
You are Remarkable!
Kevin 😊

The Power of Goals
I woke Monday morning to read that Pope Francis died at 88. Many stories will be written about his life, impact and significance. While I am not a Roman Catholic, I understand both the historical and present-day importance of the Pope’s role.
I know Pope Francis had been hospitalized earlier this year for pneumonia and had returned to his Vatican residence, but beyond that I haven’t followed nor do I know anything else about his medical condition.
Why am I writing about it then?
Because I am struck by the timing of the Pope’s death – the day after Easter.
Easter – the day of greatest significance to Christians everywhere is an anticipated day by believers everywhere. I can imagine, the Pope was looking forward to the sacred day as were the estimated 2 billion Christians who celebrated worldwide. While he didn’t lead the Easter Mass, he did participate in it – his last public appearance – less than a day before he died.
I’m sure Pope Francis had the date marked on his calendar. And like many others, passed after a milestone event had passed.
You know of those who lived to see a loved one graduate, get married, hold a grandchild, or other milestone moments.
My mother-in-law is 99. While she is working through a recent fall, I would wager on her now making it to her 100th birthday in September.
All of this gives us one more powerful picture of the power of goals. Goals help us achieve more than we thought we could, help us make a bigger difference in the world, and sometimes give us, literally, something to live for.
If you believe as I do, say a prayer for the Pope, his family and Catholics everywhere.
And regardless of your beliefs, take a minute to think about your biggest and most meaningful goals – hold them close, keep them clear, and keep moving towards them.
