Why Employee Experience Matters (10/27/2025)

Happy Tuesday!

Many say it is an experience economy now. One example? There are often fewer gifts under our Christmas tree – unless you count an envelope that describes an experience, rather than a box with something tangible inside. This trend matches the growing focus on how we experience our work, not just going to work and drawing a paycheck.

I’m also writing a bit about a four-letter word that gets in our way far too often. Don’t worry – the article is rated G for General Audiences.

Is our next webinar on your calendar? If not, mark it now: November 11 at 2 pm ET. It’s my last public webinar offered here this year, titled, Seven Signs You Have a Significant Leadership Gap (That You Didn’t Know You Had). It is free for you and all those who care about getting better results in your organization. Learn more and register here.

If you enjoy this issue – pass it on to someone or use the link below to encourage them to subscribe.

Make it a great Tuesday and remember …

You are Remarkable!

If You Want Greater Productivity on Your Team – Stop Doing This

Articles about productivity these days will mostly be about AI – which is understandable.

This isn’t one of those articles.

Every leader I have ever talked to would tell me they want their teams to be highly productive – and typically feel like they could be more productive. If any one of them were to ask me what my biggest tip would be – what should they do to lead their team to greater productivity – I would tell them to stop something.

Stop looking busy.

I have long said and wrote that busy is a dangerous four-letter word. It is dangerous because it focuses on activity not accomplishment. When we are busy, we are active – but not necessarily accomplishing as much as we’d like.

When we look busy, people will:

  • Think they can’t interrupt us (which might keep them from getting info they need to be more productive).

  • Equate our actions as the ones they should emulate (every leader is leading by example, even if it isn’t a helpful example).

  • Create a culture of busy, hurry and activity – which might be counter to high productivity.

None of these are good outcomes and none will help you or your team actually be more productive.

What should you do instead of looking (or being) “busy”?

  • Practice calm.

  • Focus on the most important things (including time with your people).

  • Reflect on your productivity each day – to determine what is working and what isn’t.

Ultimately if you want more productive team members, you need to model, recognize and encourage those same behaviors and practices in yourself first.

Why Employee Experience Matters

You’ve heard the riddle: Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?

The business version of that same riddle is who comes first, the customer or the team?

In the book, In Search of Excellence, Tom Peters and Bob Waterman made retailer Stew Leonard famous for his granite sign in front of every store, which reads:

Rule #1 -- The Customer is Always Right”; Rule #2 - If the Customer is Ever Wrong, Re-Read Rule #1

While you may not have shopped at one of Stew Leonard’s regional dairy stores, chances are you have stayed at a Marriott property. Their mission is:

“If we take care of our people, they will take care of our customers, and the customers will come back.”

Those two statements describe two trains of thought…
