Why People Don’t Want to Go to Training (07/29/2025)

Happy Tuesday!
Don’t close this too quickly – because in the article below, you will see Kevin with a more negative tone. If you have read for a long time, you might realize that I generally write in a positive manner which aligns with my general outlook on life and work. But sometimes, you have to call a spade a spade, which is what I am doing below.
And, I’m writing about wedding receptions too (kinda). Another first.
Next week, perhaps I will share observations or lessons from my class reunion, which is next weekend.
Make it a great Tuesday and remember …
You are Remarkable!
Kevin 😊

A Lesson from Dry Wedding Receptions
Nearly 39 years ago, our wedding reception was dry – cake and punch – no alcohol and no band. This morning, I read an article in the Wall Street Journal titled “You’re Cordially Invited to Our Dry Wedding. Hope You Have Fun?” (unlocked article here).
I’m not really writing about wedding receptions (though I will be paying for my daughter’s next year and it won’t be dry). My observation is about expectations.
When we had our wedding, many were “cake and punch” affairs, while today, very few are. Neither the simple or the highly detailed wedding is “right” or “wrong” except, perhaps as defined by the expectations of those attending.
Regardless of your feelings about what wedding receptions could or might look like, I encourage you to read the article because I’m guessing at least one of the quotes will open your eyes as to what some expect from a wedding reception.
The value of that insight again isn’t about weddings as much as it is to understand that expectations are powerful. Remember that when you choose to do something new or different, there may be more resistance or misunderstandings than you considered.
If you plan to do something new, recognize and prepare people for what is different. Clearer expectations will help everyone become accustomed to the change – and perhaps enjoy the change much more too.
Why People Don’t Want to Go to Training
It might seem odd for me to write about why people have objections to training, since most readers (maybe you) are “all in” for developing yourself and others. If you are focused on and invested in development and self-improvement, you most need to read this. Why? Because you might not acknowledge – or even realize – that not everyone is seeing the world the way you do.
The truth is, lots of people have objections to training – and until you know what those objections are, you can’t possibly help people get past them. Whether you are thinking about this for members of your team or across your enterprise, you can’t shift the mindset of others until you understand their current mindset and belief.
