Why Your Leadership Development Efforts Fall Short (02/10/2026)

Happy Tuesday!

Football season is over, at least for a little while. Below I have a lesson from the big game that isn’t really sports-related at all. I’m also writing about why so many leadership development efforts fail in organizations.

Both beg questions for your teams and your organizations and are worth reading and sharing.

Speaking of sharing – have you shared the information about our upcoming webinar with others? I’m developing two webinars for later this month – both are focused on developing leaders in your organization. If you haven’t checked them out (the right one for you will be quickly obvious), start here.

Once you’ve done that, do share – because chances are there are others who want and need to hear the ideas I will share too. If you have ever wanted/hoped/tried to have our help in your organization, getting others to watch these webinars will help you make that happen.

Thanks for reading and have a great week.

You are Remarkable!

Kevin 😊

A Super Bowl Reminder

People who watch the Super Bowl watch for different reasons.

They’re at a party. They have a bet on the game. They like the halftime show or the celebrity sightings. For some, it is all about the commercials. And some care about the game.

You can find team or leadership lessons throughout, if you are looking for them. And for me, that came when the game was over, when the Seattle players were being interviewed after winning. What struck me the most was how they all talked about the rest of the team – their “brothers” several called them.

I suppose you will always hear some of that when talking to players from winning teams, but this seemed different.

It seemed less perfunctory and more personal and profound.

What would you say after achieving a lifetime goal? Would you talk about your teammates and coaches? What would you say? And how long would it be before they came up in your thoughts and comments?

There are plenty of reasons why the Seahawks are world champions, but how they feel about each other is a more important one than you might imagine.

If you want to win at higher levels, think about your team and how you can help that group become more focused, more connected and more committed – not just to the outcomes, but to each other.

Why Your Leadership Development Efforts Fall Short

Leadership development is effective only when it changes how leaders think, decide, and act under real-world situations, pressure and contradictions.

Organizations invest millions of dollars each year in leadership development. Yet many are quietly dissatisfied with the leaders those investments produce.

This is not because leaders are unwilling to learn.

And it is not because leadership development “doesn’t work.”

Why that’s true isn’t a simple one-size-fits-all answer (sorry). But there are some important reasons we must consider.

Why is it that our leadership development efforts are falling short?
